Writing in telc Deutsch B2: the e-mail in the exam
Writing in telc Deutsch B2, the German exam: 30 minutes, one semi-formal e-mail, and a choice between two tasks. Here are a practice task, a model e-mail and the three criteria it is marked against.
The task
You choose between task A and task B — in the Übungstest, a request for information and a complaint — and write a semi-formal e-mail. Each task gives four points. You cover three of them, or two plus one aspect of your own that fits the situation.
It needs a subject line, a greeting, an opening and a closing, and at least 150 words. It is worth 45 points, 15 % of the whole exam. Decide fast: the 30 minutes are already running while you read the two tasks.
A practice task
In German, as in the exam: you joined a gym two months ago and things keep going wrong. Write to the management.
Sie haben vor zwei Monaten einen Vertrag mit dem Fitnessstudio „Vital Plus“ abgeschlossen. Seitdem gibt es immer wieder Probleme. Schreiben Sie eine E-Mail an die Leitung des Studios.
- 1Beschreiben Sie, was Ihnen beim Vertragsabschluss versprochen wurde.
- 2Erläutern Sie, welche Probleme es gibt.
- 3Erklären Sie, welche Folgen das für Sie hat.
- 4Machen Sie einen Vorschlag, wie das Studio das Problem lösen kann.
Behandeln Sie darin entweder drei der Punkte oder zwei der Punkte und einen weiteren Aspekt Ihrer Wahl. Denken Sie an Betreff, Anrede, Einleitung und Schluss. Schreiben Sie mindestens 150 Wörter.
A model e-mail
Betreff: Beschwerde über meine Mitgliedschaft (Nr. 4471)
Sehr geehrte Damen und Herren,
seit dem 1. September bin ich Mitglied in Ihrem Studio. Ich wende mich heute an Sie, weil ich mit Ihren Leistungen leider nicht zufrieden bin.
1Beim Vertragsabschluss wurde mir zugesagt, dass das Studio täglich von 6 bis 23 Uhr geöffnet ist und dass alle Kurse im Beitrag enthalten sind. Gerade deshalb habe ich mich für Sie entschieden, denn ich arbeite oft bis spät am Abend.
2In den letzten sechs Wochen war das Studio jedoch mehrmals schon um 20 Uhr geschlossen, ohne dass dies vorher angekündigt wurde. Außerdem wurde der Yogakurs am Dienstag, für den ich mich extra angemeldet hatte, ohne Ersatz gestrichen. So konnte ich in dieser Zeit kaum trainieren.
4Ich schlage daher vor, dass Sie mir den Beitrag für Oktober erstatten oder meine Mitgliedschaft um zwei Monate kostenlos verlängern. Sollte beides nicht möglich sein, bitte ich Sie, mir eine Kündigung ohne Frist zu ermöglichen.

It covers points 1, 2 and 4. Each gets more than one sentence: at B2, a single sentence is not enough for a point.
What counts
- Three points (or two plus your own aspect), each in more than one sentence. With only two covered, the first criterion, task completion, gets B at best.
- The situation. Off-topic means D on all three criteria. On topic but not on the situation sets only the first criterion to D.
- Register and structure: „Sie“, a subject line, a greeting such as „Sehr geehrte Damen und Herren“, a closing with a request or a deadline and „Mit freundlichen Grüßen“, and linking words such as „außerdem“, „daher“, „sollte … nicht“. This is the second criterion, communicative design.
- Grammar, spelling and punctuation — the third criterion, accuracy. An A allows no systematic mistakes, only an occasional slip.
Each criterion gets A to D, that is 5, 3, 1 or 0 points. The sum times three gives the points, 45 at most.
Common mistakes
- Only two points covered.
- A point ticked off in a single sentence.
- No subject line or no greeting.
- Fewer than 150 words.
- Hesitating too long: both tasks started.
Write your e-mail in the app: points for each of the three criteria, the reason, and corrections from your own text. A language model marks it, not an examiner.
