Reading in telc Deutsch B2: the three parts of Leseverstehen
Reading (Leseverstehen) in telc Deutsch B2, the German exam: three parts, 20 tasks, 75 of 300 points. You do it together with the language elements, in 90 minutes. Here is what each part tests, with a short exercise and its answers.
The three parts
| Part | What you do | Tasks | Points |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 · Gist | headings to texts | 5 | 25 |
| 2 · Detail | questions on a text, a, b or c | 5 | 25 |
| 3 · Scanning | short info texts to situations | 10 | 25 |
Part 1. Five short texts and ten headings (a–j). Exactly one fits each text, each heading can be used once, five are left over. What counts is the topic of the whole text: a heading that only repeats a word from the text can be exactly the wrong one.
Part 2. A longer text — in the Übungstest, two articles on the same topic — and five tasks with three options each (a, b or c). Detail is what counts: find the place in the text and read it closely before you choose.
Part 3. Ten situations and twelve short info texts (a–l). Each can be used once. For some situations none fits — then the answer is „x“. Each task here is worth 2.5 points, in parts 1 and 2 5 each.
An exercise in the format of part 1
The exercise is in German, instructions included, as in the exam.
Welche Überschrift (a–e) passt zu welchem Text (1–3)?
Show answers
- 1 a — The trial is just starting: „seit dem 1. Mai“, „drei Monate lang“. „Verlängert“ (e) only fits text 3.
- 2 b — More and more young people volunteer. Heading d says the opposite.
- 3 e — The trial was to end in July and now runs to the end of the year — it is extended.
Left over: c, d.
Tips
- The 90 minutes are shared with the language elements. There is no clock per part — you split the time yourself.
- In part 1, read all the headings first, then the texts. Cross off what you have used.
- In part 3, read the situations first and mark what matters: when, where, how much, for whom.
- „x“ is a real answer. What almost fits is usually the trap.
In the full B2 tests reading and the language elements run together in 90 minutes, as in the exam. Afterwards you see every task with its answer.
