telc Deutsch B1 and B2: telc's model test with answers

For telc Deutsch B1 and B2, the German exams, telc gives away one practice test (Übungstest) each: a complete test with answers, the listening as an MP3 and the marking criteria. For B2 it is also the exam's model test. Here is where to find it, what is inside and how to use it so that it tells you something about yourself.

Where to download the practice test

On telc's page for the exam, under “Übungstest herunterladen”: telc Deutsch B1 · telc Deutsch B2

You get a ZIP file with one PDF and one MP3, both in German. For B2 the page also has a handbook and exam tips, with sample writing and comments on how it was marked.

What the practice test contains

  • A complete test: reading, language elements (Sprachbausteine), listening, writing and the oral exam — the same parts as in the exam.
  • The answer key to tasks 1–60: reading, language elements and listening.
  • The listening transcripts, on their own pages after the key.
  • The answer sheet S30, the marking criteria for writing and speaking, and the table of points and weighting.

Writing and speaking have criteria but no answers: the key will not tell you how many points your letter earns.

How to use it well

  1. Once, in one go, against the clock: reading, language elements, listening and writing take 150 minutes at B1 and 140 at B2.
  2. Let the MP3 run without stopping: in the exam the recording is not paused.
  3. Transfer your answers to the answer sheet, only then check them against the key and turn them into points with the weighting table.
  4. Hold your writing and speaking against the criteria — ideally with someone whose German is B1 or better.

You pass with 60 % in the written and 60 % in the oral part: 135 of 225 and 45 of 75 points.

More official practice tests

telc gives away one practice test per exam. It sells more in its shop: versions 2 to 6 for B1, versions 2 and 3 for B2. The booklet costs €12 (B1) or €12.50 (B2) and comes printed, in 3–5 working days. For the listening you also need its MP3 for €13.50. So one more set costs €25.50 at B1 and €26 at B2. To the telc shop.

What a practice test cannot do

  • After the first run you know the answers. A second one measures your memory, not your German.
  • The clock runs only if you time yourself.
  • Nobody marks your writing and speaking, and for the oral exam you have no partner.
  • It is protected by copyright. That is why we link to telc and keep no copy here.

For afterwards: 6 tests for B1 and 5 for B2, our own tasks in the exam's format — timed, listening without pauses, writing and speaking marked by a language model, and your points against 60 %. One per level is free, all of them €39 for 90 days.
