telc online exam: can you take telc Deutsch B1 or B2 from home?
Published
You cannot take telc Deutsch B1 or B2, the German exams, from home. The telc Remote Tests, which run online with remote proctoring, exist at B2 for many European languages, and telc says explicitly: «der Remote Test wird nicht für Deutsch angeboten», the remote test is not offered for German. telc Deutsch B1 and B2 come digital, hybrid and on paper, always at an exam centre.
Is there telc German online from home?
No. The Remote Tests are a separate family of exams: at B2, on your own laptop with a webcam, with remote proctoring, for languages such as English, French, Polish or Ukrainian, 14 in all. German is not among them.
Even for the languages that exist, telc adds limits: REMOTE certificates are currently not accepted for visa or residence procedures. The document is not explicitly titled «Zertifikat», carries a note on the online proctoring, and cannot be checked in the verification portal. For naturalisation or a settlement permit, a remote test would be no answer even if there were one for German.
What does “digital exam” mean, then?
An exam on a device, but at the exam centre. telc lists three forms for telc Deutsch B1 and B2: digital, hybrid and paper-based. In a digital exam you enter your answers in the exam software, on a device provided for the exam; using it for anything else counts as cheating.
The form does not change the content. The exam rules apply to exams on paper and in fully or partly digital form, and the Modelltest sets structure, scoring and timing for each. Which form your centre offers, ask there. More than 3,000 centres set their own dates and register every exam with telc 14 days ahead; how to find one is on the dates and registration page.
What is different in a digital exam?
The way you work on the device, not the rules. In a digital exam the briefing covers mainly logging in to the software and how it works: timing, navigation, choosing answers. Instead of the answer sheet, you enter answers directly in the software. ID, allowed items and cheating rules are the same as on paper. The oral can run in the software too; examiners need an extra DIGItelc licence for that.
One practical difference concerns registration: for paper exams the centre fixes the number of candidates by the registration deadline, for digital ones it can still change it up to the exam day. Whether your centre gives out later places is its own decision; it is worth asking when time is short.
What is actually online at telc?
Four things around the exam:
| What | How |
|---|---|
| Result | since Q1 2026 a digitally signed PDF by e-mail |
| Authenticity check | verification portal, by QR code or participant number, date of birth and date of issue |
| Exam training | the «Live-Online-Prüfungstraining» course on Zoom; it ends with a certificate of attendance and a mock exam result, no certificate |
| Übungstest | one official Übungstest per exam with audio files, a free download |
The training is preparation, not an exam. And the PDF with your result is not an online test but the result of an exam at a centre. How it arrives and what it is worth is in telc certificate: how long is it valid?.
How do you practise online for the exam at the centre?
With the format you will get at the centre. telc’s free Übungstest shows structure, times and marking exactly; but there is only one per exam. After that you need more tasks in the same format: with a time limit, with recordings that play as often as in the exam, and with feedback on writing and speaking against telc’s criteria.
One thing has to be clear: no online practice test, including the telc Deutsch B1 mock test on this site, is a telc exam or leads to a certificate. It tells you where you stand; the certificate comes only from an exam centre. Offers that promise a telc certificate online without an exam at a centre fit none of the forms telc itself names.
